I led you to the water

I led you to the water
stepping softly over the worn down path
through sun-soaked trees down to the water
the flowers have grown tired
so I blow them a kiss and whisper
don’t drop your petals just yet
as I led you to the water then watched you
stepping to the edge
trampling over the flowers
kicking rocks in
while I’m looking up at sun-soaked trees
I led you to the water
and you still refused to drink

from my second poetry book,
The Lovers.
