this morning I woke up to the moon and the sky was pink and purple and blue
calling you at five-thirty in the a.m.
do you remember last summer when we stayed up all night and neither one of us wanted to say goodbye
so we didn’t
even though you were thirty-four and I was thirty-three
we had responsibilities and you told me that it wouldn’t happen again
so I drank up everything you would give me
god, we were thirsty
and ten-thirty turned to five then you said goodnight and I watched the sky turn from pink to purple to blue
just like this morning when I woke up to the moon
from my third poetry book, Made of Earth.
