Ways to clear your energy: a quick guide.
What is energy?
Everything is made of energy.
That’s not just some woo-woo stuff, it’s actually science…and ever since I started learning about vibration and frequency, I’ve been interested in learning more about energy.
“Energy is your body’s magic! It is your life force. You keep it healthy and it keeps you healthy. If you are sick or sad, shifting your energies feels good. When you care for these invisible energies, it makes your heart sing and your cells happy!”Donna Eden
So energy is the life force of your body–even after your body dies, your energy continues to exist because energy cannot be destroyed, it just changes form.
And because we are all energetic beings, our energy can connect with other’s energy. Most of the time we do this unconsciously and we can feel sad, angry, confused, or even happy for seemingly no reason, and this is much more common and intense in empaths and highly sensitive people. (This post tells you about different kinds of empaths)
Generally, only 15-20% of the population is considered to be “highly sensitive” and less than that are considered “empaths.” But we are STILL energetic beings, and most people easily connect to the energy of their family and friends.
Even with family and friends, it’s important to protect your energy.
How to protect your energy
It’s important to note that our energetic body is not confined to our physical body–it extends outside of it. You may have experienced this before when you’re walking on the street and you see someone who looks totally chill, but you get some “bad vibes”. That’s their energy.
Or when you walk into a building and it just feels GOOD and then you meet the most lovely person at the door–that’s their energy.
Have you ever had a friend or family member that is constantly asking you to do things for them without ever returning the favor? How do you feel when you do the thing?
Or maybe you have a friend who is just really negative all the time and it’s draining to be around them.
Maybe it’s someone who is angry and their affecting you.
Maybe you’re even feeling SO happy one day, and then someone comes in and just their presence sucks the happiness right out of you.
These are the reasons why we need to protect our energy. While there are a broad range of emotions, it’s said that energy comes from just two types;
negative energy comes from fear and positive energy comes from love (source)
So how do we do that?
- self-care. I’m 100% serious. Caring for yourself is caring for and replenishing your energy. When you practice self-care by having honest communication, safe boundaries, and boosting your energy with things you love (creation-mode), you have strong, independent energy.
- Imagine a white light protecting you (more on that here)
- You can also imagine a white bubble of light surrounding you
- spend time grounding yourself on the earth
- build a “wall” of energy against negativity
- set clear boundaries with people if you haven’t already
- use a mantra like this “Their energy is not mine” (from Strong Sensitive Souls)
- trust that you are strong enough to protect your own energy. We’ve been conditioned to believe that someone else always has the answers to fix our problems; we do this in the medical field, the nutrition sphere, and even with that we wear. And there is 100% validity to what people do, but NOT when it overrides what WE feel we should do. Trust yourself and your intuition.
How to clear your energy
Even when we protect our energy there can be times when we are influenced by another’s energy. I’ve experienced this as someone taking a sledgehammer to my wall and watched the whole thing crumble, and I’ve had to rebuild it. I’ve also just experienced this as a nagging shadow that is difficult to shake. Maybe you’re just feeling grumpy AF and you don’t know why. These can be signals that you need to clear your energy.

Connect with negative ions:
Out in nature, the movement of air, water, sunlight, various particles, and water transform into negative ions which in turn produce positive vibes 😘✌🏼♥️🌼 Mountains, other areas with lots of trees, beaches, and waterfalls all have the highest concentrations of negative ions. Waterfalls have as many as 30,000-100,000 negative ions per cubic centimeter…compared to, at the very most, 300 negative ions in your car or an office, or the 2-4 thousand in the country air. There will even be a high concentration of negative ions after a heavy rainstorm–which is interesting because storms always make me feel alive and I like to go stand in them until the risk of getting struck by lightning is too much. ⠀⠀⠀⠀
Basically, when negative ions enter your bloodstream, they increase serotonin levels which elevate your mood, balance stress, boost energy, and reduce depression. So go outside. Take a shower. Open the windows!
Move your body
Movement literally moves energy out of the body. Last month I kept getting cards that told me to “dance”, so I’ve been trying to do that more. The other morning I was dancing in the kitchen (literally, it’s the only place that has wood floors) and I literally started crying. And I was dancing to “Raisin’ Hell by Kesha, so it’s not like it’s your typical tear-jerker.
I’m including a link to my small “energy movement” playlist–I will be adding to it as I find songs. Just FYI, it’s not filled with songs you’d necessarily hear in the club, and they aren’t exactly “holy”–we’ve equated religion with spirituality and while they can be combined, they are separate, but that’s a different post for another day.
This playlist is designed for you to move your body in a way that isn’t typical of what you see–it’s designed so you interpret what moves you, even if all you do is stand in one spot and move your arms, or if you’re like me, just throw your body and arms around to the beat like I’m in some sort of interpretive flow….and then when Taylor Swift’s “delicate” plays I mostly do the three hula moves I know lol.
Going along with that, just plain music can also clear or move energy…and it doesn’t even have to be spiritual. 3oh!3, Post Malone, and Taylor Swift move my energy just as quickly as an instrumental. It just depends on my mood and if I’m in the mood to rage or cry.
I also imagine pushing the energy out and away from my body.
Gratitude is one of the highest vibrating emotions and can clear your energy very quickly. Keeping a gratitude journal is one of my favorite practices.

Spend time in the water
Water is a conductor and a cleanser–we talked about it a bit when we talked about negative ions; even a bath can be energetically cleansing. Or go swimming!
Sleep is HEALING. It recharges your body and your energy. Maybe you’ve been shamed for sleeping too much so you find rest to be elusive. Please remember: it is not a competition to see who can get the least amount of sleep. Sleep is healing.
Prayer is a weird thing for me because it’s tied to religion, when in fact, prayer, again, can happen outside of religion. Laura Lynne Jackson says it’s when we consciously direct our thoughts to the other side, and it’s a good way to clear your energy and raise your vibration.
Prayer is you speaking to God. Meditation is allowing the spirit to speak to you. –Deepak Chopra
Meditation is a good way to clear your energy and get clarity as well.
I easily take on other people’s energy, so I’ve been practicing the mantra “this energy is not mine to carry” when I come across situations where I feel like I’m taking responsibility for their energy for no reason. It’s been very helpful…even a bit weird and kind of “numb” feeling because I’m used to feeling the frenetic energy of taking on someone else’s shitty vibes and carrying them.
Smell is the fastest way to shift our mood and is 10,000 times stronger than our other senses. So while you can do the whole visualization thing, if you can grab your favorite essential oil and repeat your mantra, you’re going to get a very quick result as well. Citrus oils are great for lifting mood, and herb oils like patchouli and tree oils are grounding.

Smudge your space
Yes, even if you’re white you can smudge your space and I fully believe that you can use whatever plant you want. I wrote about this a bit on my post about palo santo, but I’ll include what I wrote here as well:
I will be 100% honest, cultural appropriation is hard for me to understand because I come from such a mixed heritage–I’ve never felt like I completely “fit” into one culture; I’m either too much of one thing or not enough of another, so I’ve always just pulled things I learned from different cultures, even if they weren’t my “own”.
But I still try to be mindful of appropriation aka taking someone’s culture and using it as your own. This one time we went to spend Thanksgiving in the Smoky Mountains in North Carolina. We spent the day after Thanksgiving hiking, then stopped in the Cherokee reservation to check out a couple of the shops.
I remember my husband parking the car and I told him to wait because I needed to take out my braid before we went into the shop. He was so confused as to why, but as a darker-skinned person who is kind of culturally ambiguous and has been mistaken for “Native American” and “Cherokee” and “Navajo” and “Ute” before, especially when I wear a braid, I didn’t want to accidentally portray a false image. Let’s be honest, my people also come from Denmark and they wear braids too, but…there I was, taking out my braid so no one thought I was trying to appropriate.
I don’t have a black and white answer to this concern and because I don’t it seems dismissive, though I don’t intend it to be. But I also believe that people cannot decide who can and cannot use a plant, not even a holy person (if the pope told you that you couldn’t use a certain plant for smudging because of the color of your skin, would you listen? I know I wouldn’t).
It’s important to understand that all plants, no matter what they are, have life and are sacred and to understand the cultural significance behind what you are using. But, saying that people can’t use certain plants because they are, let’s be honest, white, seems counterproductive.
My favorite thing to use is Palo Santo and you can read more about it here.
Breathing exercises are a great way to clear energy as well!
